Getting Started with cPanel

Logging in to and Accessing cPanel


Logging in with a Username / Password


As a reseller, you will receive one single username and password, which provides you access to both WHM and cPanel, each of which are accessed through different ports.


In the case of cPanel, you can login to the server hostname which would be sent in your welcome email, however you will use the :2083 port…


https://alfa.cloudns.io:2083


Note here, that the hostname is ‘unbranded’, avoiding any mention of the Brixly name or brand. The address ‘alfa.cloudns.io’ is the ‘hostname’ of the server, and the :2083 is the ‘port’ used to access the cPanel interface. 


This can be used to login to the cPanel account for your account, irrespective of whether your domain yet points to the server, which is ideal for testing. However, once you have pointed your domain to the server, you can login directly using your own domain, such as…


https://yourdomain.com:2083


Again, the :2083 is specifying the ‘port’ of the cPanel service, which differs from the previously mentioned port :2087. In this case, accessing this specific port will redirect you to the cPanel login interface.



Note: cPanel can also be accessed through a ‘subdomain’ which exists automatically when pointing a domain to the server. To access this, you can instead use…

cpanel.yourdomain.com

You will be presented with the cPanel login screen, where you can then enter your username and password which was provided in the welcome email.

Logging in via our Client Area


Please note that you can also log in without using the username and password for your cPanel account, by logging in via our client area.


To do this, you can log in to our client area at https://client.brixly.uk, navigate to ‘Services -> My Services’, selecting the reseller account.


From here, you can click ‘Login to cPanel’ on the left hand side, which will also securely log you in to your WebHost Manager.


Logging in via WHM


You are also able to login to the cPanel account via WHM, by navigating to ‘List Accounts’, then selecting the orange ‘cP’ logo listed next to the domain. This method doesn’t require credentials, so is ideal for logging in to clients cPanel accounts.

You are able to log in to WHM by accessing cPanel first of all. In order to do so, login to cPanel as per the above steps, then click the ‘WHM’ icon.

Bolt-Cache - Exclusive to Premium Plans


Bolt-Cache is a plugin for cPanel, built by the developers at Brixly designed to drastically improve site loading speeds for WordPress (and many other) applications / sites.


Brixly uses a unique ‘stack’ for web hosting – by default its incredibly fast, but can be further ‘tuned’ to enhance performance. Bolt-Cache makes that process incredibly simple, with a 3 click interface giving you access to some of the worlds fastest caching technologies.


Our ‘Stack’ – Designed for Performance

A ‘web stack’ is basically software, stack’ed together to serve websites or applications from a web server. Here at Brixly, we have a unique ‘web stack’ which differs from most hosting providers, designed from the ground up to ensure you get only the best performance from your hosting experience.


Most hosting providers will either use ‘Apache’ or ‘Litespeed’ as the web server, which is the software which ‘serves’ the applications contents. Instead, we use ‘mod_lsapi’ (The Litespeed PHP Handler) with an event driven Apache as the primary web server, but use ‘NGINX’ (in our opinion, the world's fastest web server) as a ‘reverse proxy’ to Apache / mod_lsapi.


By default, NGINX will be responsible for ‘relieving’ much of the pressure from the Apache service, ensuring that performance and reliability is outstanding. NGINX provides protection from DoS attacks (those which bypass our network level DDoS protection), as well as serving directly the static resources (which it can do significantly faster than Apache standalone). The combination provides outstanding performance with full compatibility with all scripts / applications you would run on a hosting environment.


The results of this facility provides your clients unparalleled performance, benchmarked to outperform the most common caching methods and configurations provided by most hosting providers today.


Many providers work on the basis of a ‘one solution fits all’ plugin, however with our extensive background in performance tuning and optimisation we have come to the conclusion that this isn’t realistic nor feasible - instead, different applications and requirements may need different solutions. As such, Bolt-Cache provides a simple and clear comparison of a number of caching methods which vary based on the application type.

CloudNS (also known as Bolt-Cache Advanced)


The CloudNS plugin is a more extensive extension to the Bolt-Cache plugin, however both essentially power the same backend functionality. 


CloudNS however, boasts more complex configuration options and tools, such as the following…

Website Preview


cPanel / WHM provides a very basic ‘Preview URL’ which looks similar to… 

http://1.1.1.1/~username 


This has a few limitations however…


  • ‘Rewrites’ in the .htaccess files don’t really work as expected and generally causes issues with the display of sites powered by WordPress, Joomla etc

  • To view a WordPress site via the preview URL, you would need to amend the URL’s in the Settings -> General screen of WordPress (far from ideal)

  • Its ugly! Providing this to a potential / development client isn’t great, and reveals your servers IP address directly

  • If you don’t have WHM, then you have to work the link out! There is no link to this URL from within cPanel itself

  • You can’t install an SSL to the temporary URL, therefore if your site uses https:// you can’t use it

The solution


Here at Brixly we have built an option within cPanel called ‘Website Preview’, which gives you the ability to generate a temporary URL which is fully compatible with WordPress and almost 90% of web applications. No modifications are required within the application or site in order to preview the site, making it incredibly convenient. 


Best of all, those links generated are ‘generic’, and don’t include the IP address of the server. This makes them ideal for building sites before DNS has propagated, or for sending clients access to a website without the need for any complex changes (such as the hosts file method).
